Main Gate of of Former Second Senior High School is located on westside of Katahira campus facing Katahiracho dori avenue.
Former Second Senior High School was founded in 1887 (Meiji 20), and this gate was built with main wooden school building around 1889~1891 (Meiji 22~24).
Hanroku Yamaguchi and Masamichi Kuru as engineer of the Ministry of Education designed the buildings of Former Second Senior High School.

This gate consists of four square columns with stone quadrangular pyramid. There is no gate door from the beginning. Instead of the gate door, there are iron chains between columns.
With the relocation of Former Second Senior High School, this gate was moved to several place in Sendai city (Kitarokubancho, Mikamine) too. After, in 1950 (Showa 25), Former Second Senior High School was closed, and this gate was kept in Sendai City Museum.

In 1968 (Showa 43), Former Second Senior High School alumni association moved this gate to the original place.
In 1996 (Heisei 8), the alumni association renovated this area as "Former Second Senior High School Katahira memorial garden" in commemoration of 110 years anniversary.
This monument is valuable as a reminder of the Former Second Senior High School, and it also shows the love that graduates have for their alma mater.
